Section 1: Principles at Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3 we aim to introduce key skills such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and 3D work. The Art Department follows a common curriculum project planned by the Lionheart Trust followed by additional projects planned by the Art Department. Contemporary and traditional artists are introduced in each project. Reciprocal reading supports students to develop their literacy skills and build on their understanding of key art terminology. All Key Stage 3 projects repeat skills to ensure that students are prepared to meet the standard required at GCSE Art.
Each project at Key Stage 3 follows whole school learning scientist strategies of modelling and concrete examples which are fundamental parts to promote student progress. Teachers regularly use the visualiser to demonstrate techniques and past student work to provide exemplars.
Section 2: Connectedness (linking and co-ordinating)
In Years 7 and 9, students are taught in mixed ability groups and have 2 lessons of Art per week. Students are on rotation with Music and Drama where they spend approximately 12 weeks with each subject. In Year 8 students have 1 hour a week of Art lessons. The aim at Key Stage 3 is to provide students with a range practical and creative thinking skills. All projects introduce key skills in Art which allows for development and progression which leads into Key Stage 4 if students choose to select the subject.
Section 3: Art five year plan
In addition to the Art curriculum, we offer the following:
- Run regular school and national competitions
- Plan external workshops and trips to build students cultural development
- Run extra curricular activities such as art catch up and art club
Section 4: Teaching and Learning
Schemes of work at Key Stage 3 are broken down into key practical skills that students need to develop to be prepared at Key Stage 4. Projects are regularly changed and adapted through student feedback and to keep work engaging and exciting.
Modelling, concrete examples and visual learning objectives are core features of teaching and learning in Art as they support students progress with their artwork. Schemes of work are planned to be engaging as well as building on key knowledge and skills. Students are encouraged to communicate their ideas formally using SHAPE when taking part in classroom discussion and questioning. Regular written and verbal feedback allows teachers to check understanding and adapt teaching and learning to suit all learners in the classroom. Students have access to knowledge organisers, complete retrieval practice tasks and complete regular assessments to maximise their learning.
